Hello, my name is Emily but everyone calls me Emi. I am currently a student at the University of Cincinnati as a double major in astrophysics and philosophy with a minor in math. My plan is to move on to graduate school and ultimately become a professor.
My passion for astrophysics began when I was about eleven and I read "A Wrinkle in Time." In the back of my edition there was an interview with Madeleine L'engle in which she said that the theories of time and space that she incorporated into her novel were based on Einstein's theory of relativity. The next day I went to the library and checked out "Black Holes, Worm Holes, and Time Machines" by Jim Al-Khalili and that was the end. I was hooked. Between then and now I have acquired a small collection of books on quantum mechanics and astrophysics.
I grew up with philosophy, my father has a degree in philosophy so from a very early age I was conditioned to think outside of the box. Throughout my chidlhood years I was encouraged by my parents to ask questions even if they couldn't be answered. One of my favorite quotes (and my personal motto) is this: "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." -Aristotle
But other than that, I have probably too many hobbies for my own good. Music is my second passion. I play piano, ukulele, guitar, bass guitar, and mountain dulcimer. I've played as the pianist for musicals and played guitar/ukulele and sang gigs solo and also with my dad. I have also played at Catskeller on campus a couple times and will continue to play there in the future.
I also have a love for art. I run a blog on crocheting that recently hit a third of a million views. Other than that I draw with charcoal and oil pastels on the side purely because it's calming. I'm also a bit of a gamer, but I play games more for the storyline, or the gameplay, or the art than anything else. Another hobby of mine is ping-pong. I've played since eighth grade and have competed in tournaments. And finally, I write a mean haiku.
My first year at UC taught me a lot more than I bargained for. I learned how important it is to have people in your life that you not only trust, but that are truly trustworthy. Coming from a home schooled environment, the adjustment was difficult for me, and figuring out who to trust was even more difficult. Some things you learn the hard way, but I am so grateful for this year because I feel that I have grown so much as a person. I now have and maintain relationships with other students that are meaningful and precious to me.
My goal at University of Cincinnati is not only to graduate, but to be able to function in my field and move on to graduate school. I would love to be able to pursue music on the side as a hobby. Further in the future, I would love to be a professor at a university and/or do research. I am beyond excited to see where the rest of my life takes me.
